History
At Millbank Gardens Primary Academy, we understand the importance of a rich history education that helps children connect with Britain’s past and the wider world. Our curriculum is designed to give pupils a deep understanding of how people’s lives have changed over time and how historical events have shaped the society we live in today.
We build on the National Curriculum through carefully crafted textbooks written by teachers in our Trust’s Curriculum Centre. These resources guide pupils through both ancient and British history in chronological order, creating a clear and engaging narrative that brings the past to life.
Our ancient history curriculum begins with the earliest human societies, where pupils learn about the transition from hunter-gatherer communities to settled civilisations. Children explore the achievements of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt, including the development of writing, laws, art and literature. Their studies continue through Ancient Greece and Rome, where they discover the lasting influence of these civilisations on democracy, philosophy, engineering and science.
In British history, pupils investigate the significant people and events that have shaped the British Isles. They study the Christian conversion of England, influential figures such as Alfred the Great, and important developments including the Norman Conquest, the feudal system and the emergence of Parliament.
Throughout the curriculum, pupils encounter important historical concepts such as government, law, monarchy, civilisation and society. These ideas are explored within the context of specific historical periods, helping children develop secure historical knowledge and understanding over time. Lessons encourage pupils to ask thoughtful questions, examine evidence and consider how beliefs, language and leadership have influenced societies throughout history.
Our aim is to inspire a lifelong love of history while equipping pupils with the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed to understand the past and its impact on the present. Through chronological storytelling and the exploration of key historical themes, we help children develop a deep and lasting understanding of the world around them.
