Geography

At Millbank Gardens Primary Academy, we believe geography helps children make sense of the world around them. Through the study of places, people, environments and cultures, pupils explore the Earth’s surface and the lives of those who inhabit it. We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of important geographical concepts while helping them communicate their knowledge with confidence and clarity.

Through activities such as map work, using globes and atlases, fieldwork and data collection, children develop essential geographical skills including interpreting information, analysing patterns and drawing conclusions. These experiences encourage curiosity about the wider world and help pupils understand the relationship between people and their environments.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge over time, revisiting key themes in greater depth as pupils progress through the school. Learning is supported by four high-quality textbooks written by teachers in our Trust’s Curriculum Centre with reference to the National Curriculum. This approach enables children to develop a secure understanding of both physical and human geography, alongside knowledge of significant locations, landscapes and geographical features around the world.

We want pupils to see geography as a dynamic and evolving subject. Lessons are designed to help children understand how environments change over time and how different perspectives can shape our understanding of the world. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, we aim to inspire pupils to become thoughtful, informed and responsible global citizens.
